We are not sure where Martha Elizabeth (Colhoppe) Pilcher came from. Census records indicate that she was born either in Ohio or Kentucky. My best guess is that she came from Covington, KY based on information I found of two women in St. Louis who are probably her sisters. Even the spelling of her maiden name is somewhat of a mystery, although I tend to believe it was "Colhoppe" because that is what her daughter Etta wrote on a death certificate, and Etta was somewhat of a family history buff. Her son Frank listed her father's name as "John Kolhap" on her death certificate. She may have Americanized the name to "Callhappy". I saw that spelling on her St. Louis marriage records, and my grandfather Larry Hoge used that spelling on Emma (Pilcher) Hoge's death certificate.

We do know that on 20 Apr 1863 she married Richard Montgomery Pilcher in St. Louis. Together the couple raised seven children: Francis (Frank), Emma, Richard, Alexander, Harry, Anna Margaretta (Etta) and Eugene.

She lived on her late husband's Civil War Pension from 1894 until her death in 1916. She is buried in Valhalla Cemetery along with three of her children: Frank, Eugene and Etta.
