William B Somerville, one of the leading citizens of the Aliceville community in Pickens Co Ala, and an esteemed Confederate veteran, passed away at his home near that city on July 9, 1927, being in his eightieth year. He has lived all his life in this community, was well know through out Pickens Co , and had served the people of the county as tax collector for one term. At the early age of 16 years he enlisted in the ranks of the Conf army and served from his enlistement throughout the remainder of the war in the company of Captain Baskins, under the command of Gen Forrest.** After the cessation of hostilities, he returned to his father's home to assist in the rehabilitation of the Southland. He was married in 1875 to Miss Mollie Archibald, and to them were born several children, who with their mother still survive. Soon after marriage he removed to Franconia, Ala where the family still resides. Mr. Somerville when but a lad, identified hiself with the Presbyterian Church and was an honored officer of his Church and clerk of its Session for years, and it was in the large conscourse to pay their last respects to his memory. His body now rests in Oak Grove Cemetery (Mrs. Willie Gardner)

June 2004 - Update - Researcher - Jim Strickland, advises this cemetery was once called Oak Grove and renamed Franconia Cemetery. He also transcribed from the grave stone a birth date as Nov 16, 1847. We thank him and have made the correction.

Update 8/23/2014 from FAG contributor William Somerville

My research shows that William B. Somerville was not with Forrest, but rode with General W.T. Martain as a escort. This is confirmed by the C.S.A. file on card number 44232310. His father William H. Somerville looks to have been the one who was with Forrest after The 4th Confederate Cavalry was assigned to Forrest's 8th cavalry. See Film number M232 roll 38 civil was soldiers records.
