Dabney C. Byrd is the son of William M. Byrd (born 1809, Virginia -died 1856, Maury County, Tennessee ) and Mary Ann Harris Byrd (born 1812 Louisa County, Virginia - died 1870 in Tennessee). They were married 14 June 1830 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Dabney Byrd had the following siblings:

PVT Dabney C. Byrd served in the 48th Tennessee Infantry, and died on August 30, 1862, from wounds received during the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky. This was a massacre that included scores of heroic Confederate heroes who sadly, died a brave death together and so are buried in a mass grave on that site, a monument erected bearing their names for all to see as a tribute to their brave and heroic service. They gave the ultimate sacrifice for their families and Southern Homeland.

Dabney married Mary Catherine Ladd on 5 July 1860 in Maury County, Tennessee.
