Houston Chronicle (TX) - May 16, 2004

NINA ELIZABETH BRYAN SALATHIEL of Houston, Texas died Tuesday morning 27 April 2004 at the age of 92. She was the widow of Richard Arthur Salathiel who passed away in 1972. She is survived by her siblings, Mrs. Marguerite Lowe, James Bryan, Mrs. Doris Wright, and Delbert Bryan; her five sons, R. Mark Salathiel, William M. Salathiel, Stephen F. Salathiel, Thomas H. Salathiel, and John A. Salathiel; five grandchildren, Richard A. Salathiel II, Mrs. Jennifer A. Hynek, Mrs. Bronwyn H. Salathiel-Thomas, Sabrina M. Salathiel, and Jonathan M. Salathiel; and great granddaughter, Brandi T. Salathiel.

Nina was born in Sedan Kansas on 18 March 1912 to Frank Logan Bryan and Ethyl Anna McCollum, the first of five children. The family moved around a bit as Nina grew, moving to Cloudcroft New Mexico; then Coffeyville, Kansas; Independence Kansas; Chanute, Kansas; and finally back to Independence, Kansas. Nina graduated from Chanute High School in 1930, and then went on to Independence Junior College (now Independence Community College) where she earned a teaching certificate for rural elementary education. She taught elementary school classes for several years in rural schools, and attended the Methodist church in Independence. Then, with the assistance of her mentor at Independence Junior College, Miss. Margaret Meyers, Nina went on to Kansas State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University) where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1937. On January 1st 1938, she married her high school sweetheart, "Dick" Salathiel, and joined him in Houston, Texas where he had taken employment with Humble Oil Company. Dick and Nina set about raising a family, and this activity consumed her energies until, as her sons matured, she turned her attention to flowers, horticulture, and garden club organizations. Nina became well known in gardening circles as a gardener, floral designer, garden club organizer, member (Texas Star Garden Club and Far Corners Garden Club), Chairman and member of several Federation committees, President of the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs (1969-1971), a National Flower Show Judge, and as a speaker on many topics (Texas wildflowers, horticulture, ferns, greenhouse and under-light growing, microgardens, miniature and dwarf plants, hanging baskets, flowering and ornamental shrubs, garden fragrance, and floral design). She traveled the world visiting six continents, and enjoyed the company of gardening people wherever she went. Her passion was always to be with Dick, and one day return to Independence, Kansas. A memorial service will be held for Nina at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, 109 South 13th Street, Independence, Kansas at 10:00 AM on Saturday, 22 May 2004. She will be interred with Dick in the Salathiel family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.
