BRUNSWICK -- Barbara A. Ruby, 75, formerly of Durham and Richmond, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at the Skolfield House in Brunswick. She was born in Boothbay on Feb. 21, 1932, the daughter of Roland and Rose (Nickerson) Burke.
Barbara owned her own home bakery in Freeport and later worked as a bookkeeper for L.L. Bean, Auerbach Shoe, Eastland Shoe and Freeport Shoe for more than 35 years, retiring in 1980. Not one to just sit at home, after retirement she owned and operated her own restaurant, B & G Variety, in Durham for many years, showcasing her love of cooking. Barbara was a member of the Topsham American Legion Auxiliary and a past member of the Rebekahs and Eastern Star.
Barbara married her first husband, Norman Goben Sr., in 1952. After his death, she later married Frank Ruby, in 1980.
She was predeceased by her parents and both husbands. Barbara is survived by her sons, Norman G. Goben Jr., of New York City, and Roland "Ron" Goben, of Richmond; granddaughter Christal Strout and her husband, Brent, of Turner; and great-granddaughter Taylor Strout.
Memorial visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Kincer Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the spring at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.
