James Howe was born in Kirby,Vermont in 1806.He was the son of, Salah Howe and Elizabeth "Betsy" Spears.His father,Salah Howe was a Revolutionary Soldier for the state of New Hampshire.At the age of 19 James moved with his parents to Plattsburg,New York.In 1831 James Howe founded the newspaper "New York Sprit of the Times"(Later Wilkes Spirit of the Times)After his fathers death in 1840 he moved to Lafayette,Indiana in 1841 where he later founded the "Lafayette Daily American" In 1846 his widowed mother,Elizabeth Howe came from Vermont to live with him in Indiana.

James Howe became proprietor of the Lafayette Hotel.Served as City Clerk for 1858 and 1859.In 1878 he was elected Justice of the Peace.

James married,Hannah Wilstach of Washington,DC.in about 1842.She was the daughter of Dr Charles F Wilstach and his wife Hannah Whittier Ustick. Charles and Hannah had the following five children all born in Lafayette, Indiana.
