She was born March 3, 1923, in Harrisonburg, Va., a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Julia (Donovan) Riley.
She graduated from Harrisonburg High School, attended James Madison University and led the Harrisonburg Boys Band for three years.
In May of 1943, she married Lt. William H. Branum, U.S. Army Air Corps, who was killed in action March 14, 1944 during a mission in Italy.
She married MGySgt. B.C. Knicely Jr., USMC in 1945 and over the next 20 years she lived in Virginia, Guam, Hawaii and Florida. After the retirement of MGySgt. Knicely in 1963, they settled near Churchville, Va. She served as president of the Lady Staunton Garden Club, Issac Walton League of America and the Staunton Chapter of the Federated Garden Clubs. Moving to Staunton in 1991, she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Bank and YMCA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Rosalie Taylor, and her brother, Gen. T.F. Riley, USMC.
Those who survive her include her daughter, Judith "Tommye" Hermanson and her husband, Rody, of Churchville and her son B.C. Knicely III of Roanoke; grandsons, Brian Hermanson and his wife, Kim, Justin and Jonathan Knicely, all of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Tracy Hermanson Burford and her husband, Tim, of Churchville; and great-grandchildren, Renee Ann Burford, Briana and Dean Hermanson. She is also survived by a niece, Beth Schreiner and her husband, Bob, of Annadale, Va.
The Rev. David D. Reed will conduct a graveside service at Woodbine Cemetery on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be her friends at Baldwin Park.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hamrick Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the YMCA, 708 N. Coalter St., Staunton or the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2566, Staunton, Va. 24401.
