Joanna and her brother Darius were orphaned in 1814, and went to live with their uncle.Squire Allen. This is per the biography written in Darius own lifetime. Joanna Allen Ewing's obituary states that she moved to Wayne County in 1849. She would have moved with her husband and family. They appear in the 1850 US Federal Census in Sodus, Wayne Co., US Fed.Census.

OBITUARY
Mrs. Johanna Ewing, [1808-1891] died at the residence of her son, L.D. [ Lorenzo Dow] Ewing, Sunday, Jan. 11, 1891, aged 87 years and 7 months. H er maiden name was Allen, and she was born in Rennselaer Co., N.Y., June 11, 1808, and moved to this County in 1849. One by one the servants of the master pass from sight, but not from the vision of our faith. They still live and love. They belong to us and we belong to them. While we are thinking of them they remember us. They are not very distant. The thinnest partition separates this world of sense from the world of spirit. We live on the border of the invisible. The unseen is consciously near. The devout soul is in touch of Heaven. Sister Ewing early entered upon her christian life, and all who knew her speak of her kind christian character. She outlived the majority of her circle of friends , but has now gone on to join them. Her death was a translation, she f ell asleep in Jesus; calmly,
peacefully she passed away and was at rest. Her daily life was lived unto the Lord. Her well-worn and often marked Bible bears witness to her faithful study of its pages and to the responses of the soul to its holy words. She believed it; she loved it.

"So lie our buried dead,
When nature's race is run;
A transient stay with us they pad
In preparation for their eternal home."

Her last audible words to the relatives and friends gathered around her b edside were, "Meet me." Her relatives and friends and all who knew her will miss her but she lives enthroned and like the stars in the limitless distance above as her pure life and godly example shine, and will continue to shine with a luster undimmed. A short sermon was conducted at the house by Rev. G. E. Campbell. The sermon was preached in the Free Methodist Church, at Alton, of which she was a member, by Rev. Mr. Newto n, their pastor, from Rev. 21:4. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there by any more pain; for the former things are pa ssed away."

ALTON

A somewhat remarkable funeral occurred at the F.M. Church on Tuesday o f last week. The deceased was Mrs. Calvin Ewing, aged 85 years, who had been a resident of this place upwards of 50 years. Her four sons were present, who had not been together before in thirty-five years. Their parents being poor, they were thrown upon their own resources when mere boys and drifted to different parts of the country, not to meet again until they met at their mother's funeral. Peleg, the oldest, is a thriving carriage manufacturer of Luddington, Mich.; Darius, the second s on, is a well-to-do citizen of Troy, N.Y.; James, the third son, is president of the St. Louis Salt Co., and Lorenzo, the fourth son, is master mechanic on the Sodus Bay division of the Northern Central Railroad, residing at Sodus Point."

The following Will for Benjamin Allen refers to full-siblings Joanna (Allen) Ewing and Darius Allen as half sister and half brother of Benjamin.
It refers to Sylvestrus (Sylvester) Allen and Lorenzo Dow Allen as full brothers of Benjamin.

Joanna wrote the following poem contained in the obituary for her little grand-daughter, Mary Lucretia Bayless (July 3, 1859-May 17, 1860):

In Sodus, May 17th, 1860, MARY LUCRETIA,

The following poem accompanied the obituary and was written by Mrs. Joanna Ewings:

Dear parents dry your tears,
And hear my story:
Your Mary, she has gone
To the world of glory.

With her little glittering wings
Amongst the angles,
With her harp of golden strings,
She sings God's praises.

How oft will she look down
And see you weeping,
In the silence of the night,
When all are sleeping.

Methinks I hear her say,
In whispers lowly,
O, mother, weep no more,
For I'm in glory.

She is like the blooming rose,
She will bloom forever;
Her hair will ne'er grow gray,
Her face ne'er wither.

But you and I must fade,
Our time is running;
Going down unto the grave
From whence there's no returning.

With Jesus, her best friend,
And angles, shining,
On the banks of flowry beds,
Where there is no dying.

So strive to watch and pray,
Be meek and lowly;
And meet your Mary there,
In the realm of glory.

So parents dry your tears,
And mourn and grieve no more;
And meet your happy child
On Canaan's peaceful shore.
