U.S. Congressman. Moving to Iowa, in 1888, he graduated from Columbia University New York City, in 1905, attended Valder’s Business College, Iowa, and was editor-publisher of the Decorah Iowa Journal. During World War I, he served overseas as a First Lieutenant in the 88th Division, U.S. Army. After the war, he resumed to his newspaper interests, was Postmaster of Decorah, Iowa and served as park commissioner of Decorah. In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third, Seventy-fourth and Seventy-fifth Congresses, serving until 1939. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed United States Marshal for northern Iowa, serving (1940-51).
