John Joor Barrow would serve his country in the family tradition by attending the Kentucky Military Institute for military preparations. He also attended Bolmer's School in Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia and finally Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa.
He would serve as Captain in the 11th Louisiana Infantry in Company I in the Civil War. He enlisted on August 11, 1861 at the war's beginning, but was wounded at Shiloh a year later in 1862, an injury that would force his resignation from the C. S. A.
Serving in politics, Capt. Barrow would be elected to the Louisiana legislature (1871), Sheriff of West Feliciana parish (1877-1880) and the Louisiana senate in the term of 1888-1890)
