He was the second son of Sylvester and Mary Frances Fortin. He and his brother, Walter(He was killed in 1943 when his Troop Transport was sunk), joined the military right after Pearl Harbor. He died from wounds sustained when his ship, USS Marathon, was struck by a one-man suicide submarine while docked at Buckner Bay, Okinawa on 22 July 1945. He died at the age of 21, 2 weeks before the end of the war. He left behind his wife, Corinne, and 2 sons, Sylvester III and Walter.
