Gene was the son of Len and Gertrude (Merrigan) Farley. During World War II, he spent fifteen months serving in Germany. After his discharge in 1947, Gene remained in the Army reserve. He spent two years attending Morningside College in Sioux City, IA and had completed a year at USD in Vermillion, SD. Gene died in a vehicle collision on Highway 77, ten miles south of Beresford, SD. Gene's collision with the truck occurred after the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel.
