Alex Streit Sr., 73, passed away at him home in Vernon pm Sunday after a lengthy illness. He was a vice president and director of the Waggoner National Bank and a prominent farmer and landowner in the area. Alex was born in Der Bergweid Bei Obermuhlem, Bern, Switzerland to parents Christian and Anna Maria Risler Streit on September 25, 1868. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. At the age of 14 he came with his parents from Switzerland to the United States settling in the southwestern portion of Wilbarger County, Texas. The next year, on April 7, 1883, his mother was killed when a cyclone struck their home. Four years later the father died. The eldest brother, Charles, emigrated to Canada where he raised his family. The other brothers, Fred, Albert, Godfrey and Rudolph, all made their homes in Wilbarger County, as did Alex, until their deaths.

Alex married Mary/Marie Guggisberg 2nd Dec 1888 in Vernon, Wilbarger Co., TX., they had 6 children, 3 boys, 3 girls: Mrs. C.S. Schmoker of Lockett; Mrs. Jake Schmoker of Harlingen; Mrs. Lizzie Staub of Portales New Mexico; F.A. Streit, H.W Streit and Rudolph Streit, all of Vernon. Rudolph died here in 1928. Mary was born 15 Nov 1868 in Der Bergweid Bei Obermuhlern, Bern, Switzerland and died in
1908 in Vernon, Wilbarger Co., TX. She was first buried in Paradise Cemetery and later relocated to Wilbarger Memorial Park.

Mary was the daughter of Hiromuness/Hieronimus Guggisberg & Anna Schmutz. Her sister Rosalie/Rosina "Rosie" Guggisberg married Alex's brother Fredrich "Fred Streit.

After Mary died, Alex married Emma Schmoker in 1909 in Wilbarger Co., TX., they had one son, A.C. Streit.

Pallbearers were M.D. Wolverton, A.L. Lockett, H.B. Alexander, Daniel Bond, J.O. Rouse, W.H. Gfeller, H.C. Gfeller and Fred Riethmayer.

Services were held in the Lutheran Church in Lockett officiated by Rev. J.W. Kern. Burial was in Eastview under the direction of Underwood Funeral Home.
