Brigida Alicia Lay was born in the Republic of Panama on October 8, 1919. She went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at her home in Rosenberg, Texas, at the age of 91.

Alicia was the daughter of Carlos Chang and Maria de los Reyes Chang Diaz. She was reared in Panama where she married Ricardo Arturo Lay on August 15, 1942. She and Ricardo celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before his death October 7, 2007.

Alicia worked for many years for the United States Agency for International Development in Panama. Through her work she assisted many Panamanian students attend college in the United States and to impact her own country when they returned to Panama to work and to become involved in business and politics.

As a young lady she placed her trust in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, and He was her constant companion throughout her life. She spoke easily of her Jesus and desired that others know Him and the redemption that He offered.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Balboa, in the Panama Canal Zone. While living in Panama, Alicia and Ricardo helped start a church for Chinese people living in Panama. Her and Ricardo's Chinese heritage caused them to have a love for the Chinese people and a concern for their spiritual well being.

In 1978 Alicia and Ricardo moved to San Antonio to be near their son Rick. They worked with Rick several years in his business. During their years in San Antonio they became naturalized citizens of the United States.

It was while living in San Antonio that Alicia developed the artistic ability God gave her. While primarily self-taught by studying art books, she also studied under some leading artists. She became well known in San Antonio art circles and was a member of the La Villita Art Group. Some of her art work was exhibited at the Alamo.

In 2005 Alicia and Ricardo moved to Rosenberg to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Mei-Ling and Donnie Melton. She became a member of First Baptist Church of Rosenberg and then River Bend Baptist Church of Fulshear.

In Rosenberg, Alicia continued painting, and in the last year joined Jeanie's Quilters, a group of ladies who gather weekly to quilt and to make pillows for cancer patients. She received much joy from the creative work she did and from the fellowship with her friends.

Alicia was a two-time cancer survivor. Psalm 103 was a passage of scripture that helped sustain her during her long bouts with cancer. She wrote that scripture reference on all her paintings to give glory to God for her recovery.

Alicia was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a caring friend.

While Alicia's death leaves her family sad, they rejoice to know that she is now in the presence of Jesus her Savior and has been reunited with her dear husband Ricardo.

Left to mourn her passing but grateful for her life are her daughter Mei-Ling Melton and husband Donnie of Rosenberg and her son Ricardo (Rick) Lay Jr. and wife Kathryn of San Antonio. Alicia is also survived by her grandchildren Tianne Moon and husband Mike of Lantana, Texas; Tim Melton of Madrid, Spain; Todd Melton and wife Kayla of Katy, Texas; Erica Lay of Waco, Texas; and Daniel Lay of College Station, Texas. Three great grandchildren also survive: Katy and Kourtney Melton and Selah Moon. Alicia is also survived by her brothers Angel Cesar Chang and Leonel B. Diaz of the Republic of Panama, and her sisters Dalys Vogel of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Eutimia Walters of Perry, FL; and Mivia Aldridge of San Diego, CA., as well as many nieces and nephews.
