"V - 8 MARY CORDELIA LIEUTICIA TOWNSEND.
Mary was born in Logan County, Kentucky in (n -168)
1828 and came to Springfield, Missouri, with her parents,
William ....
...in the late fall of 1832. Twelve years later, on March 7, [n -169)
1844, when she was barely sixteen years of age, Mary married
Chesley Cannefax (b. Sep. 1, 1808-d. June 17, 1877), twenty years
her senior. He was born on the bank of the Staunton River, now the Roanoke, in Campbell County, Virginia.
The Cannefax group moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky in
1810 and lived there until after the 1830 U. S. (n -170)
Census. Radford Cannefax and his family arrived in Spring-
field, Missouri, in 1831, settling four miles southwest of
town on a farm which later belonged to Chesley.
One of the best accounts concerning the life of Chesley
Cannefax was written about 1870 and reads as follows:
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF CHESLEY CANNEFAX.
Chesley Cannefax was the first sheriff ever elected by
the people after the organization of Greene County in
1834. He comes from the ....

About 1835 or 1836, Chesley had been appointed by the
governor, Brevet-Colonel of Militia. Judge Yancey was the
Colonel Commanding. ....
In 1837 he went to Texas with the intention of perm-
anently settling there, but returned to Missouri and in
1838, was elected by the Democrats as a member of the
Legislature. He served two years there. ....
On March 7, 1844, he married Mary Cordelia Lieuticia
Townsend, who was born in Logan County, Kentucky. For
some years during the War he acted as Justice of the
Peace. He has always been a Democrat, voting first for"

Chesley was a member of a group of 104 men representing
Southwest Missouri in the 1847 War With Mexico. He was
mustered into the 3rd Missouri Mounted Volunteers at the
call of President Polk, Col. John Ralls, commanding. The party
marched across the plains and over the Santa Fe Trail, (n -171)
to Santa Fe, his regiment ....

Cannefax, Sergeant and John R. Cannefax, a private.

Chesley Cannefax died of Apoplexy in Springfield on June
16, 1877, at sixty-nine years of age. He was buried in the
Cannefax family plot on his home place, located (N -178)
three and a half miles west of Campbell Street Road on Sun-
shine Street, in a grove of walnut trees.
Ella, the youngest daughter of Chesley and Mary, married
Allen Williams. She also inherited the farm. One day, during
a heated argument with Ella, he went to the (n -179)
cemetery and pushed all of the tombstones over, probably
destroying some of them. The few remaining lie flat on the
ground. Chesley's beautiful marker bears the Emblem of the
Master Mason and the dates of his birth and death."

A few feet from Chesley's resting place is found the
marker of Joseph Cannefax (b. Mar. 1, 1797 - d. Feb. 28, 1846), an
older brother of Chesley. Foot markers bearing the initials,
"R. C." and "A. C." are those of Radford and his wife, ann [sic - Ann].
The tombstones of Mary, wife of Chesley, and Sarah, the wife
of Joseph, are not to be found. Sarah was born Mar. 18, 1799
and died April 20, 1890.

it is appointed to man once to die, being weak in mind but
of perfect mind and memory do make and appoint this to be
my last Will and Testament.
First. I will and bequeath my soul to Almighty God who
gave it me, and my body to the Grave to be buried in
a decent manner, at the discretion of my Executors.
Second. I will and bequeath to my beloved Wife Annie
all my property and money due me during her natural life"

Forty acres, it being a part of the tract of land I got from David
Best at the death of or expiration of my Wife's Widowhood.
Fourthly. I will to my son John Cannefax one Negro boy named
Isham and one horse valued at Fifty Dollars and also money
enough to buy Forty acres of land at Governments price, at the
death or expiration of my wife's Widowhood.
Fifthly. I will to my daughter Sally Farris Forty Dollars at my wife's
death or expiration of her widowhood to be in fully of her portion
in my Estate.
Sixthly. I will to my son Calvin Cannefax on negro boy
named Jim to be in full of his portion in my Estate.
Seventhly. I will to the bodily heirs of my daughter Nancy
Stockton One Hundred dollars to be equally divided between
them at the death or expiration of my wife's widowhood, and
that to be in full of their portion of my Estate.
Eighthly. I will to my son Benjamin W. Cannefax two Negro
boys names Henry & Gilbert at the death or Expiration of
my wife's widowhood.
Ninthly. I will to my son Chesley Cannefax two Negro
boys named Nat and Andrew and one Negro Girl named

Tenthly. I will to my daughter Polly Stockton one hundred
dollars at the death or expiration of wife's Widowhood to be
