Annie was born 'Vestie May Tuttle' to Arah Tuttle and Mary Perkins Tuttle, on 13 August 1887 in Deerfield, New Hampshire. At the age of seven months her mother died. Now, with two other children, Arah was not able to care for the newborn and at nine months she was adopted by Charles and Martha Knight and re-named Annie May. She died from pregnancy complications after the birth of her fourth child in 1922.
