~ Mount Vernon News ~ 1949 - 98-Year-Old Fredericktown Woman's Memory Excellent - By Hal Clawson - A slight, white-haired Fredericktown woman, will celebrate her ninety-eighth birthday here Wednesday. She's Mrs. Alice Dean. While attaining 98 years of life is quite an achievement, there is something even more remarkable about Fredericktown's oldest citizen - her memory. With a constant smile on her face, Mrs. Dean will tell you what she was doing when she first heard the news that Lincoln had been shot. She was helping her grandmother, Mrs. Nancy Clark, in the basement of the latter's home which was the first house west of the Green Valley church. A neighbor on horseback had brought the weekly addition of the New York Tribune which carried in streaming headlines news of the shooting of President Lincoln. The papers had been thrown off at Ball's Crossing and a man on horseback delivered the papers to the farm homes. Traveled by Wagon - As I sat there listening to this aged woman recall dates and happenings of 70 and 80 years ago, it seemed almost unbelievable that a person could possess such a keen memory. Born near Berlin in Holmes county Feb. 23, 1851, she came west to Green Valley with her family in 1854. The journey was made by covered wagon. Her father was Thomas Clark and her mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Myers. On Dec. 27, 1870 Alice was married to W. H. Dean, who, like most men of that time, was a farmer. They first lived on a farm five miles south of Mount Vernon on Martinsburg Road, and in 1876 moved to a farm west of Fredericktown, just off Chesterville road. They moved to Fredericktown in 1909. Mrs. Dean is the eldest living member of the Fredericktown Presbyterian church, having been a loyal member for 79 years. Mrs. Dean lives with her two daughters, Margaret and Sylvia, on S. Mulberry street in Fredericktown. A son, Dwight, lives near Bellville. One of a family of 11 children, Mrs. Dean has never been seriously ill. Until recently she read quite a bit. Her hearing is slightly affected. As I sat there listening to Mrs. Dean talk, I found myself thinking: "Here's a person who has lived for nearly a century - and she's still enjoying every minute of life.
