John married Sarah 'Sallie' Tuttle on December 10, 1857. She was the daughter of William Tuttle and Elizabeth 'Betty' Martin Tuttle and the granddaughter of John and Barbara Frye Tuttle.
John and Sallie had three children, Martha Adelaide, John Thomas and William David Browder.
On July 23, 1862, John Nelson entered the wervice of the Confederate Army, Co. G, 21st Regiment, North Carlina Infantry., the unit that was known as the "Town Fork Invincibles." He was killed in action in Winchester, Virginia on September 19, 1864, and was buried at the battle site.
