William F. O'Hara

William F. O'Hara passed from earth at 3 o'clock Sunday morning at his residence on Dodge Street, to which he had been confined since last October. His ailments was Bright's disease and he intense sufferer through all these months. He experienced period of severe sickness during several years and last fall he was under treatment in Chicago of a specialist who pronounced his case hopeless and he returned home to await the end. Last March when he seemed on death's threshold his life partner and faithful nurse was taken from him by a sudden sickness and an additional sorrow was added to his last days. The end came suddenly at last, as Saturday evening he seemed unusually cheerful and at ease.
Mr. O'Hara was a native of Ireland and was 67 years old. He grew to manhood in his native land and received his education there. Fitting himself for the business of an architect and builder, he came to the British provinces of Canada landing at St. John, New Brunswick, where he lived several years. He was married there June 24, 1851, to Miss Mary Reid, and they came to Galena in 1855. Mr. O'Hara followed his chosen vocation successfully here from this time until he was taken ill. His wife died March 28, 1896. Their children are Mrs. J. H. Alden of Chicago; Mrs. Robert H. Lingford of Chicago; William S. O'Hara of Leavenworth, Kansas; Howard G. O'Hara, manager of P. F. Colliers agency at Pittsburg, Pa. and Miss Mamie O'Hara residing at home. A son Frank died eight years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Alden have been here for months attending their invalid parents. The other members of the family were summoned to the funeral.
Mr. O'Hara was a prominent and honored citizen of Galena forty-three years and held many offices on Trust. He was Alderman from the Third ward several terms and subsequently was a member of the school board for years filling the office of secretary most of the time. He was a collector of West Galena township from 1889 to 1894, when he obliged by ill health to relinquish its duties. He was a prominent member of the Old Fellow's fraternity, affiliating with both Wildey and Galena lodges. He was secretary of Wildey Lodge seventeen years and two years ago became a Charter member of Galena Rebakah lodge. He was also a life long member of the Methodist Episcopal church and lived a life consistent with his professions. Combining the highest integrity with a cordially of manner, he was popular with all classes and his death is lamented at the loss of a valued citizen.
The funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 o'clock at the residence. Rev. E. C. Arnold, D. D. will officiate.
