U.S. Benson Dies. Pioneer Pastor Passes Away Saturday Morning. Ulysses S. Benson, 77, one of the pioneer ministers of southern Kansas died in Kingman Saturday, August 21. He had been in failing health for the past two or three years. Funeral services were held at the Livingston Chapel Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. R.A. Potter of Murdock, an old friend and associate of the deceased. Burial was in the cemetery at Chase, by the side of his wife, who died August 19, 1910. At the time of her death their home was in Hoosier township. Mr. Benson was born at Arcola, Ill., September 26, 1865. The family came to Kansas and settled in Rice County where he was married to Katie Link in 1886. Later they came to Kingman county. Rev. Benson was first associated with the United Brethren Church. Later he entered the ministry and transferred his membership to the Methodist Church and he was noted for his evangelistic work. Among the charges he served were those at Turon, Penalosa, Brown Spur, Belmont, Rago, Cunningham, Holyrood, Beverly, Calista, Danville, Liberal and Nashville. He had made his home in Kingman for the past several years. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Yeager and Mrs. Paul Bessier of Wichita; three sons, Leslie R. of Kansas City, MO, Harland of Winfield and Frank of Belmont; a twin brother, Henry, of Calgary, Canada; and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Monroe of Chase, and Mrs. Minerva Hamilton of Marion, Ind. He was an uncle of Mrs. Frank Reiter of Kingman and Mrs. John Weikal of Pratt.
