Franklin - Elmer "Shorty" McClure, 93, of Bethel Church Road, Franklin, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at his residence.
He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Alfred and Emma Nelson McClure. He was preceded in death by his wives, Willie Sue Davenport McClure, Elsie Cabe Ledford McClure and Reba Slagle Miller McClure. He was a farmer and was of the Baptist denomination. In earlier years he worked on construction of the Fontana Dam and worked in the Dravo Shipyard in Dover, Dela., and Newport News, Va. He was employed by N.C. DOT Bridge crew and his first project was the Nickajack Bridge which now spans the Little Tennessee River on the Greenway. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, Jo Ann McClure Franklin and her husband, Phillip, of Mount Holly; daughter-in-law, Joan McClure of Cumming, Ga.; son, David Allen McClure and his wife, Janice, of Franklin; two sisters, Elive Mull and Eulene Grant of Hayesville; two brothers, Walter McClure of Seneca, S.C., and L.D. McClure of Westminster, S.C.; five granddaughters, two grandsons and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harold Monroe McClure, three brothers and one sister.
The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. John Rogers. Burial will be at Union Hill Cemetery in Hayesville. Grandsons, great-grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Angel Home Health & Hospice, c/o Angel Medical Center, 170 Church St., Franklin, NC 28734.
