Wilma Cyrus Breedlove, age 91 years, passed away March 28, 2011, at Dayton General Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Hubbard-Rogg Chapel with Pastor Jim Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in the Dayton City Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to the charity of the donor's choice.
She was the fourth child of Johnny Loren and Nancy Elizabeth Cyrus. She was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Covello, Wash., 13 miles into the country from Dayton where her grandparents homesteaded. The year she was ready to start school, the family moved to Dayton. Her childhood was rather uneventful. The Civilian Conservation Corps located a camp close to town when she was a teenager. Arriving with it was a tall, dark wavy haired young man from West Virginia. They met at the Christian Endeavor meeting one Sunday evening at the First Christian Church. She married George Robert Breedlove at the church parsonage Sept. 27, 1936. It was Depression time but they survived on first one job then another. Nancy Edith and Beth Alice were born during that time, then William Loren and Barbara Ann a few years later.
They purchased their home near the school and city park in 1943, and Wilma lived there until her recent hospitalization. The family took swimming lessons and participated in school activities. Wilma was in an organizational group who brought Camp Fire Girls to Dayton and was the guardian of a group for seven years, then held a position on the local council. She was an active member for a total of 18 years. In 1962 she was presented with the Luther Halsey Gulick National Award for outstanding work at the community level. The family was very active in building a cabin, Camp Nancy Lee, for the local council. In 1947 she took the General Educational Development Test because she had not attended high school. She received her diploma with good scores.
Her first experience with drawing was before school age and she continued throughout her life. When enough interested people got together they formed Dayton Art Club of which she was a charter member. They had some well known artists as teachers during the 23 years of the organization. She was always doing some new craft project. Her wheat-weaving creations, made of locally grown straw, are quite in demand in the area. For half a century she was an active member of the Homecraft Club. Her entire life except for vacation trips has been lived in Columbia County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; brothers, Kenneth and Milton; and sister, Dorothy Givens; as well as two sons-in-law. She is survived by her sisters, Martha Hamon of Walla Walla and Laura Stevens of Denver; daughters, Nancy (Richard) Bogart, Beth Webber, Barbara Lyons; and son, William; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
