Charles C. Backus
New York, Feb 15--C.C. Backus, who had been prominent as a financier, is dead at the home of his son. He was born in Charlton, New York in 1816.
About 1840, Livingston, Wells, & Pomeroy established an express line between New York City and Buffalo and engaged Bennett, Backus & Hawley to act as their agents in Utica.
Mr. Backus soon conceived and organized with others, the American Express Co. Mr. Backus was one of the promoters of the House Telegraph System.
