Born the 22nd of June 1887 in North Loop, Nebraska. His parents was John Franklin and his wife Effie Elmina Sweet 'Larkin'. Oldest of 9 siblings, only one sister and not much is known about her.

Jay first married Lois Margaret Giggey [1894 - 1922] at the age of 26. She is the daughter of G Leon Giggey and his wife Nancy Chambers. Together they had a daughter Royetta Mae [1913 - 1996]. Sadly Lois passed away at the age of 28 leaving Jay a widower with a 9 year old child to raise.

He did various jobs to provide for his family over the years. In 1910 he worked on a farm, 1920 we find him in a metal mine, 1930 Jay is a manager of a lunch room, one U.S. directory has him as a janitor, on his WW11 draft card his listed occupation is working for the city of Boulder.

He next married Amy Manlla Vogelar [1898 - 1972], at the age of 37. She is the daughter of William Henry 'Wilhelm Heinrick' Vogelar and his wife Mary Polly Alice Thompson 'Vogelar'., both immigrated from Prussia, Germany. It is her first marriage and Jay's second. They had a son Donald Dean [1934 - 2017] Amy outlived her husband Jay by 24 years, and went on to marry a second time to David Henry Davies who had been married before with children. David and Amy had planned a trip to Nebraska to visit family when they got into a automobile accident coming back to Boulder killing them both in 1972. She was 74 years old.

Jay passed on the 16th of April in the year of 1948 at the age of 60 and is buried in Columbia Cemetery, in Boulder, Colorado
