Francis Joseph Arnold Veerkamp immigrated to the United States with his parents Bartholomew Veerkamp and Louisa Oelcker when he was 12 years old. The family first settled in Montgomery County, OH. In 1836 they removed to Lincoln County, MO. Then on 11 Apr 1852 Francis, along with his wife Louisa and young son Henry set out by wagon for California, arriving on 11 Sep 1852 at Placerville, then called Hangtown. They also stayed a brief time in Uniontown, which is now known as Lotus, then to Granite Hill and Coloma.
Francis and Louisa had 10 children, Henry was the only one not to be born in California.
During his time in El Dorado County Francis was a hostler, shopkeeper, fruit grower and rancher.
