William was born in 1844 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. His parents were Jesse and Emanitha Aldredge. His family moved to Jefferson County, Florida. William was living there in 1860. He enlisted at Monticello, Florida, July, 1861, in company H, 3rd Florida Infantry. In his pension application in 1904 he claimed to have been overstrained on a forced march in Kentucky, October, 1862; transferred to the Confederate States Navy, and served as Landsman aboard the CSS Chattahoochee, May 4, 1864; also served aboard the ironclad floating battery, CSS Georgia (also known as the State of Georgia and Ladies' Ram), Savannah squadron, Georgia, 1864; transferred, at an unspecified date, from the CSS Georgia to the Charleston station; he indicates that towards the end of the war he was attached to company K, 10th Florida Infantry, and was paroled at Appomattox, April 9, 1865


After the war he was married in Thomas County, Georgia in 1865 to Laura E. Hutchison/Hutchinson

They had 3 children. Laura died in 1872. William was living in Thomas County in 1880 and working on a farm with his brother in law. He married again in Thomas County in 1885 to Dexaira Catherine Mansfield. They had 8 children. By 1900 he had moved his family to Florida and was living in Hillsborugh County. He was working as a carpenter.
