Pension application filed on behalf of his widow shows name as Saml. C. RODGERS and Sam C. RODGERS. GGG-grandaughter Cheryl Ann RODGERS reports that family Bible records and family correspondence show Samuel's middle name to be Craig, evidently after his maternal grandmother Agnes (CRAIG) LATHAN.

Son of Adam & Nancy Agnes (LATHAN) RODGERS. Married 12 OCT 1858 in Muscogee County, Georgia, by A. S. BORDEN (or BORDERS?), Minister of the Gospel, to Susan Winifred "Susie" POOL [license date and date the ceremony was performed are both 12 OCT on their marriage records, filed with Susie's application for widow's pension benefits; John H. Martin's "Making of Modern City: Columbus, Georgia, 1827-1865," (1874), Vol. 2, p. 108, gives the date as 14 OCT 1858 - this is perhaps the date the marriage was reported in the Columbus newspaper.]. Father of nine children.

S. C. RODGERS entered and separated as a Private with Company C (or Company H) of the Fifty-fourth Regiment, Georgia Infantry, CSA. UPDATE 18 MAY 2020: Linda McCardle (Contributor #48019904) reports that Samuel Rodgers was in Company H, 54th GA Regiment "Russell Guards." (She is the editor of "A JUST AND HOLY CAUSE?: The Civil War Letters of Marcus Bethune Ely and Martha Frances Ely" (2016). Marcus & three of his brothers also served in Company H.)

"DEATHS AND FUNERALS: S. C. RODGERS // S. C. RODGERS, aged 78 yeras, died this mornign at 12:30 o'clock at his home in Gentian, after a three weeks' illness of general debility. He came to Georgia in 1839 from South Caroluna and spent the remainder of his life near Columbus. He was highly esteemed and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a veteran of the Civil war, having served the Confederacy in teh Fifty-fourth Georgia regiement. // He is survived by his wife and five children, S[ernaus] M. and O[lin] L. RODGERS, of Gentian; H[erman] P. RODGERS, of Manchester, Ga.; O[scar] P. RODGERS, of Fitzgerald, Ga., and Miss [Carrie Lexora] Ora RODGERS, of Gentian. Another daughter, Mrs. E[xa] C. LAND, preceded him to the grave on December 20 last. // The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Double Churches, and the interment will be in the burying ground there." RODGERS, aged 78 years, died this morning at 12:30 o'clock at his home near Gentian, Ga., after an illness of about five weeks with general debility. Mr. RODGERS was well known throughout the county and has a large number of friends who will deeply regret to learn of his demise. // The deceased came to Georgia from South Carolina in 1839 and spent the remainder of his life near Columbus. He was a prosperous farmer for a number of years and was highly esteemed by all those who knew him. He was a veteran of the civil war having served in the fifty-fourth Georgia regiment. // He is survived by his wife and five children, S[ernaus] M. and O[lin] L. RODGERS, of Gentian, H[erman] P. RODGERS of Manchester, Ga., O[scar] P. RODGERS of Fitzgerald, Ga., and Miss [Carrie Lexora] Ora RODGERS of Gentian. Another daughter, Mrs. R[obert] E[dward] L[ee "Ed"] LAND, preceded him to the gragve on December 30, last. // The funeral took place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Double Churches. Elder HARWICK conducted the services and the interment was in the church burying grounds. There were a large number of friends and relatives of the deceased present at the services who had come to pay their last tribute to Mr. RODGERS and a number of beautiful floral designs were sent to the home. // The following acted as pallbearers: John A.
