Rev. James S. Beers, 74, of Indianapolis, passed from this life suddenly at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born April 30, 1935 in Franklin, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Sherman and Dorothy (Heckathorn) Beers.

He is survived by the love of his life, Marlene (Tetzloff) Beers, whom he married on September 2, 1956.

He was a 1953 graduate of Wilkinsburgh, PA, High School and graduated from Marion College, now Indiana Wesleyan University, in 1959. He received his Masters Degree from Clarksville School of Theology in 1977.

Rev. Beers served several congregations in the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist denomination in Ohio and Pennsylvania over a period of 20 years. He served on the Chaplain's Committee in the Indiana State House Chapel (in Indianapolis) over a period of 25 years until the time of his death. From 1973 through 1982 he served as President of Allegheny Wesleyan College in Salem, Ohio. In May of 1982, he accepted the position of senior pastor and school administrator of Salem Park Church and Academy in Indianapolis where he has continued a successful ministry for the past 27 years. He was an instructor for Union Bible College in Westfield and Covenant Foundation College in Greenfield between 1984 and 1992. For the past seven years he has also served as an adjunct professor for Indiana Wesleyan University.

Rev. Beers can best be described as a gentleman with a pastor's heart and a scholar's mind. He was multi-talented as a teacher, shepherd, counselor, and mentor.

He will be missed by his loving wife, Marlene Beers; daughter, Janene (husband: Mark) Dubbeld of Moneta, Virginia; grandchildren, Vincent James Isaac, Leighton Von Mark, Elena Joelle, Gerald Luke Channing, and Britton Quinn Joseph Dubbeld; brothers, Ronald (wife: Sue) Beers and John (wife: Carole) Beers; sister, Lois Beers; and several nieces and nephews.

A local funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Salem Park Church, 502 Fuller Dr. Indianapolis, with Rev. Paul Gray officiating.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 8 p.m. Friday at Salem Park Church and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Funeral services will also be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Zion Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church near Stoneboro, PA with the Reverends John and Ronald Beers officiating.

Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery.
