Thomas Nathan Cude was born on April 20, 1874, in Winters' Mill (the present-day Wimberley), Hays County, Texas. His parents were John M. Cude and Nancy Naomi Winters Cude; they were the owners of a mill in Wimberley which had earlier been owned by Nancy's father William Carvin Winters and Lavina Bridges Winters. His maternal great-grandparents were James Washington Winters, Sr., and Rhoda Creel Beall Winters. Both his grandfather WCW and great-grandfather JWW, Sr., were considered heroes at the Battle of San Jacinto. His fraternal great-grandparents were William Arthur Cude,Jr., and Eleanor Long Cude.
Thomas, or Tommie as he was called by his family, grew up in Hays County and Frio County where his parents later moved their family. Tommie had 5 sisters--Rhoda Emeline, Dorcas Naomi, Mary Lavina, Sarah Benina, and Anna Florence--and 1 brother--Van Hardeman Cude.
Thomas was 20 when he married 18-year-old Penny Weir in Frio County, Texas, in December 1894. The couple had only one child, a much-loved son whom they named Zenas W. Cude. Zenas was born on September 13, 1895, in Big Foot, Frio Conty, Texas, when Thomas was 21 and his wife was 19. Thomas supported his wife and son as a worker for the railroad in Val Verde County in 1910; as a farmer in Moore, Texas, in 1917; as a worker for the railroad again in 1920 in Wichita County; and in 1930 as a watchman for a furniture store in San Antonio, Bexar County.
Thomas died on August 19, 1938, at the age of 64 in the Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio, Bexar County, of cancer of the stomach. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Devine, Medina County, Texas. His widow operated a boarding house in San Antonio until her death in April 1945.
