Of Mr. Baker and his death the North Battleford (Cal.) Optimist says under a heading, "Prominent Citizen Died Tuesday Morning: The sad news of the death of H.M. Baker on Tuesday morning was received with widespread sorrow by the entire business community. Mr. Baker a couple of weeks ago had an attack of grip which he successfully fought off, but being anxious to return to business, and venturing out before he had sufficiently recovered, he suffered a reaction which later developed into pneumonia. For eleven days he fought against this more serious malady, but succumbed to its effects at 3:15 on Tuesday morning. He leaves a wife and four children aged 2, 4, 6, and 8 respectively. Mr. Baker was manager for the Crown Fruit Company at this point, and under his able control this business has enjoyed remarkable growth and development. He has been with this concern for the past 12 years, taking charge of the local branch three years ago. He was accredited with being one of the ablest men in the fruit business in the west and was known far and wide through Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia for the soundness of his judgment, and his valuable knowledge of the business. As a citizen he was unassuming and more or less reserved, but liked exceedingly by everyone who knew him. His kindly disposition and gentlemanly manner made him a great number of fast friends. He was 37 years of age." (Orleans County Monitor, 5/15/1918)
