June 19, 1917 - Jan. 11, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Abigail Ann Teeter was the sixth of eight children born to RenaMae Kincaid and Eldon Welliver. She was born in Terry, Montana, where the family had a homestead, but early in her childhood the family returned to Bismarck, N.D. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1935. On October 5, 1936, she married Francis P. Teeter, converting from her Baptist roots to Roman Catholicism. Seven children were born to their union; they divorced in 1971. Abbie is survived by five children, James Teeter (Mary Ellen), Mary Anne Smith (Pat), Janice E. Just (Bayne), Robert Teeter (Nancy) and Patti McKenna (Tom); 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She passed away quietly, with her eldest granddaughter holding her hand, on Jan. 11, 2011, in Coronado, CA, the home of her eldest surviving son, Jim. Abbie enjoyed a successful career with the telephone company in both California and Indiana, belonging to the Telephone Pioneers in retirement. Her skills as a homemaker, cook, decorator were legend. She loved to sew, knit and quilt, and was considered very adventurous, loving to travel. She had been to Germany, Spain, the Holy Land, Rome, and to Guam. Abbie moved to South Bend from San Francisco in 1977 to join the People of Praise, a covenanted, ecumenical, charismatic community. She fully embraced community life, being very involved with efforts for Trinity School, Home Management Services, as well as charitable work for the St. Vincent de Paul Soc. through her parish of St. Joseph's where she was also active as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and sat on the liturgy committee. She was a daily Mass participant, and prayed the liturgy of the hours with her household. She reluctantly gave up her independence and moved to Coronado to live with her son Jim when illness dictated it, in 2007, after 30 years in South Bend. Cremation was chosen. Burial will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park on Friday, April 1, 2011, at 1 p.m. Memorial Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, S.B., at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011. Reception to follow at the People of Praise Center, 53666 N. Ironwood Road, S.B.
