ELKIN - Mrs. Freda Marie Smith Pennington, age 94 of Elkin, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. She was born May 12, 1916 in West Virginia to Andrew Jackson and Betty Wilson Smith. Mrs Pennington was a member of Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church where she sang in the choir for several years. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and sister. Mrs. Pennington was a homemaker and a retired seamstress. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Russell Pennington; son, James R. Pennington; three brothers, Esrom Smith, Ballard Smith, and John Smith; three sisters, Twila Kirkwood, Betty Paitsel, and Doris Vanderhoff; and son-in-Law, Rev. James Couch. Survivors include: daughters, Frances Couch of Elkin and Barbara Treichel and her husband Walter of Jackson, Michigan; son, David Pennington and his wife Janet of Indianapolis, Indiana; sisters, Beulah Graves of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Shirley Arthur of Oak Hill, West Virginia; 15 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Kenny Gunn and Rev. Benjamin Cooke officiating. Burial will follow at 4:00 p.m. in Appalachian Conference Headquarters of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Dublin, Virginia. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church, 258 W. Main Street, Jonesville, NC 28642, Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 688 N. Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621, or Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care of Elkin and the staff of Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson for their care and kindness shown to our family.
