Otto Walter was born on 6 July 1892, son of August C. and Augusta Hollatz. Otto had a twin brother named Oskar. Oskar died at the age of 3 1/2 months. On 12 January 1920, Otto Walter married Alvina Marie Bohn, daughter of Edward J. and Augusta (Boehnke) Bohn, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Garner, Iowa. Otto was baptized (1892) and later confirmed (1906) at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner.

Otto Walter Hollatz and Alvina Marie (Bohn) were married January 12, 1920 at St. John's Lutheran Church and lived on the home place north of St. John's Church in Concord Township, Hancock County, rural Garner. Their three children, daughters Etta Marie, Doris Enga and son Clayton Walter, were born there.

In 1931 Otto died from blood poisoning at the young age of 39 years. He is buried at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Garner. Alvina and her three small childern then moved to Garner where they lived until the childern were through school.
