William J. (Bill) Booth, of Burgess, died January 4, 1996. Born on August 20, 1909, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida M. Booth; one sister, Mrs. Leroy (Hildagarde) Phillips of Williamsburg. He was the son of Willie Andrew and Fanny Crowther Booth. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Iola Haynie Booth. He has one stepdaughter, Mrs. Alice A. Landess of Richmond; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.


Mr. Booth served for many years as chairman of the Deacons at Fairfields Baptist Church in Burgess. Because of his faithful service, he was chosen a life time deacon of the church. He also sang in the church choir and frequently presented solos in church and community activities as well as singing in several quartets. Early he worked on a fish boat and most of his life resided in Burgess working as a waterman.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 6 in Fairfields Baptist Church, Burgess with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev. James H. Bethany officiated, assisted by Rev. Richard M. Landess, a former pastor of the church.

Pallbearers were Robert Lee Covington, Lee Cordrey, Morris Fallin, Douglas Fallin, Glenn Fallin and Jimmy Coates. Honoray pallbearers were other deacons of the church.
