Mary Elizabeth Shook Thirlwell, 83, was born in Laurel, MS on May 16, 1927 and went home Wednesday March 23, 2011.
She was a resident of Baytown, TX and many other states and countries across the world. Mary graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1945 and attended Lee College. She worked at Humble Oil and Refining Company for 16 years, and was a prominent business woman worldwide.
A devoted member of First Baptist Church in Baytown, Mary and her late husband Buddy Shook formed and were active in the Young Peoples' Department for many years. Mary was passionate about showing children the importance of art, music, and sports, and was involved in many activities teaching in each of these fields. She was a charter teacher of ceramics at the Baytown Civic Center, a charter bowling coach at Bay Lanes, an elementary teacher in Valdez, AK, and piano teacher wherever she traveled.
Mary was very proud of her Bunka Needle Art, a Japanese Embroidery, which she taught globally, and to which she devoted her later career. She wrote a best seller on the subject, was a member of the All Japanese Bunka Embroidery Association (AJBEA), earned a Master's Certification in Bunka Shishu Needle Art from the School of Art in Tokyo, Japan, and won awards (including first prize) for many of her own Bunka Art pictures. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association, the SW Craft & Hobby, the Art League (1950), the Texas A&M Mother's Club, the American Women's Bowling Association, and the Women's International Club of Saudi Arabia. She was listed as one of the Notable Women of Texas 1984-85.
Her achievements have been many. Among these are Texas State Bowling Championship, awards for her artwork and music, entrepreneur, proud photographer and writer of poetry, musician, as well as being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, church member, teacher, pet owner, and friend. She considered each of these a very special blessing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Verdue M. (Mae) Robinson and Frederick E. Miller; husbands, Henry A. (Buddy) Shook and Robert Thirlwell; and son, Dr. Larry W. Shook. She is survived by her children, Henry E. (Eddy) Shook and Sharon E. Wilson, both of Baytown; daughter-in-law, Joane Shook Eichholz of Cordova, TN; grandchildren, Stephany Shook Jaschke of Cordova, TN, Jordan A. Wilson of Baytown, Rachael E. Shook of Oxford, MS, and Natalie E. Wilson of Baytown; and great-granddaughter, Avelyn L. Jaschke of Cordova, TN.
Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Bill Yowell officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jordan Wilson, Darrel Carpenter, Ken Eichholz, Richard Phillips, and Chris Navarre.
