Jess met his wife, Laura, in Sikeston, Missouri through her father who raised sulky horses there. Jess owned and trained sulky race horses.

They moved to Mattoon, Illinois in 1926 and then in 1929 to Charleston. At the Coles County fairgounds Jess trained and cared for horses for other owners. He owned one horse of his own.
About 1936 he and his wife, Laura, started a restaurant in Charleston and then a cafe in Altamont. They next started another cafe in Charleston and lived above it. They next took one across the street.
In the early 1940's they bought a large house and took in roomers. They sold their cafe in probably the late 1950's.
