Caroline, or Barbara as she was later called, was born to Asahel Joseph Bennett and Sarah Ann Dilley. As her mother died 2 or 3 years later, Asahel gave Caroline up for adoption to George and Ann (Baker) Scott of Santa Cruz, California.
