He was the son of Wiliam DeLacey Abernathy Sr. and Elizabeth Media Buford. He served as QM2 in the United States Navy during World War II. He married in Columbia, Tennessee on 20 Mar 1948 to Evelyn Morgan who was born 16 Aug 1922. They were the parents of Morgan DeLacey Abernathy and James Mark Abernathy.
