Carl C. Axelson, 82, of Fort Morgan, died Saturday at Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan.

Axelson was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Persberg, Sweden, to Gustaf and Frida (Johnson) Axelson. He came to the U.S. at age 2. He was raised and attended school in the Paonia area.

Axelson married Dacy (Toney) Carlton on Nov. 26, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They lived in the Paonia area until they moved to live with his daughter and family in Fort Morgan in 2001. He worked as a logger co-owning Axelson Brothers Sawmill. Axelson was a coal miner and a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed traveling, training horses and being in the mountains.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Paonia, Elks Lodge No. 1807, UMWA, Grand Mesa Good Sams and the AARP.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Doiel of Fort Morgan and Kristine Franz of Grand Junction; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Axelson was preceded in death by his wife, Dacy; parents; one sister and three brothers.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Paonia Christian Fellowship Church. Interment will be held at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia.
