Cornelia was the daughter of Pierre Van Cortlandt and JoAnna (Livingston) Cortlandt.

She was born at Cortlandt Manor where her parents resided.

After her marriage to Gerard Beekman she moved to New York City, where they resided for a time. They preferred the country to city life and returned to live at the Cortlandt Manor until their own home of Peekskill Manor was completed.

She was living at Peeksill Manor during the Rev. War and was a very patriot woman, though she was harassed by the British on various occasions. At one time her brother Col. Pierre Cortlandt insisted that she vacate her home, which she reluctantly did, only to return a very short time later to see the destruction that had occurred

She was a friend with various people of patriotic feelings and George Washington was accounted as one of her friends.
