He died at Bastogne during World War II after surviving Normandy and the invasion of Holland. He received a purple heart after being wounded in December 1944, during the seige of Bastogne during the "Battle of the Bulge".

His unit was the 101st Airborne, 501PIR, Co. G., their is information about him and his unit on the 101st website under Lee A. Dougherty.

His body was brought home in 1949.
His grave at Westminster remained unmarked until January of 2010. I don't know why it was unmarked but the cemetery can confirm no marker existed.

All of his military records, including the "Report of death, dated 14 February 1945", show his name as DOUGHERTY and that is the only name the VA would approve for his goverment issued grave marker.
