Tec 4 US ArmyJoe David Baumgartner went quietly into the arms of the Lord on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, after a long, hard battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born to Walter and Jessie Baumgartner on June 14, 1926, in Corsicana.
Joe was a veteran of World War II. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 31 years. During that time he was often the first person new people met when they moved to Corsicana. As he installed their phones, he would tell them everything they needed to know and more about Corsicana.
When he opened Joe Baumgartner Insurance, he continued serving the people. He was lovingly given the name "Mayor of South Beaton" by friends and co-workers. He had pride in Corsicana and was active in the city and schools.
He was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served faithfully. His services included being a song leader, usher and door greeter where he greeted everyone with a smile, where he was also given honorary deaconship. He loved his Lord and shared that love telling stories and was always quick to pull a prank when you least expected it.
Joe's eyes would sparkle and he would swell with pride when he talked about his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Jessie Baumgartner; two brothers, Lester Baumgartner, and Charlie Baumgartner; sisters-in-law, Delores Baumgartner and Mildred Shook; brother-in-law, David Crockett; and parents-in-law, Milford and Ida Shook.
He is survived by the love of his life for 57 years, Peggy Baumgartner; daughters, Anele and husband Mike Richardson and Denise and husband Jerry Brown; his pride and joy — three grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband Kevin Collier, Hayden and wife Tiffany Richardson, and Dillon Brown and girlfriend Allison Moore; great-grandchildren, Corbin, Jace, Gavin and Kalib; sister, Frances Crockett; brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Judy Baumgartner, Tommy and Judy Baumgartner and J.B. Shook; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be special friends, the deacons of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2217 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana, TX 75110.
