Major General Daniel H. HUDELSON was born in Missouri to parents; William (1862)and Rosalea Rapp (1865)HUDELSON. Dan was raised in Southern California and graduated from Manuel High School in Los Angeles. Dan worked several jobs and joined the local California National Guard. He enlisted as a private however he was offered classes that would lead to being commissioned as an officer. Dan accepted the challenge and wound up as a 2nd Lt. By late 1925 he was promoted to First Lt.
In 1934 as a Captain he won the Marine Corps Cup National Rifle Compettion with high score.
In 1941 the Summer bivouac was held at Camp San Louis Obispo, the home of the California NG with the legendary Major General Walter Perry STORY Commanding. Major Daniel Hudelson was on the General`s Staff as G-3 Operations and Tactics Officer.
When World War II started Dan wound up in Europe as part of Patton`s 3rd Army where he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre (France).
On 25 Dec 1944 VI Corps ordered 14th Division`s Combat Command, commanded by Col Dan HUDELSON to assemble a Regimental Combat Team composed of Tanks, Armored Infantry, Armored Combat Engineers and Cavalry Recon. Just before Midnight on New Years Eve, 1944 the German Army Group G launched Operation NORDWIND, the last major counter-offensive of the war. During the night and day of 1 Jan. Task Force Hudelson found itself engaged by elements of 5 enemy divisions, however it managed to delay and blunt the German advance until substantial reinforcments from VI Corps and the 14th Div could arive and stem the attack.
Later after crossing the Danube and Isar rivers Col. Hudelson participated in the liberation of 130,000 Allied prisoners of war. LIBERATORS became the official nickname of the U.S. 14th Armored Division.
After the war Dan returned to Los Angeles, his wife Edna and a job as an executive with General Petrolium Corp. oil company. Dan continued to be active with the California National Guard with weekly meetings at the armory and yearly bivouacs at various military bases. Dan continued to earn promotions until, by the time the Korean Conflict(war) started he had achieved the rank of Major General.
In Sept of 1950 the Federal Government notified the California National Guard (40th Sunburst Division) that it was Federalized and to call the troops and report to Camp Cook in Santa Barbara County for training and eventual transport to JAPAN/KOREA. Major General D. H. HUDELSON -COMMANDING.
In Korea the 40th relieved the 24th on the battle line and encountered some of the bloodiest fighting and coldest conditions ever endured by "citizen solders". Battles like "Sandbag Castle" and the "Punchbowl" will not be forgotten.
By 1953 the Army rotated out most of the National Guard troops replacing with Regular Army. General HUDELSON was replaced by General Joseph P. CLELAND.
When Dan returned to the US he was confronted with a divorce from his wife Edna, a Congressional investigation into the conduct of the War and finally marriage to a second wife--Patricia Ann Lamoge.
Dan returned to his Oil Co. job and faded into obscurity. He died in 1970.
