John Winn - Obituary

Aged Farmer Answers Call

John R. Winn of the Sugar Grove district, died Friday night at 11:45 o'clock aged 77 years and 8 month. About four weeks ago he suffered a partial stroke of paralysis and was also a sufferer from other complications, which failed to yield to treatment.

The deceased was one of the substantial citizens of Knox township, living in the Sugar Grove district, where he owned a valuable farm of 218 acres. He was born in this township July 18, 1833, and had spent practically all his life in that section; he was a son of Metcalf and Susanna Winn. His father was born in England and when quite young accompanied his parents to Jefferson county, where the remainder of his life was spent; his mother was born in Knox township, and was a daughter of John Rinehart, who came from Germany to Jefferson county and was one of the early settlers.

John R. Winn, attended school in Knox township, but since he was old enough to handle farm tools and implements, he had been engaged in farming, devoting his large farm to agriculture and to stock raising. For a number of years he gave considerable attention to growing sheep and later years conducted a dairy business. He took considerable pride in his stock, his land and surroundings show that he had always been a judicious manager.

Mr. Winn was married December 31, 1857, to Lucinda M. Frederick, who was born on the farm on which she lives. Two children, a son and a daughter, were born to this union. Charles G., deceased, was born July 1867, and died February, 1910. Their daughter, Mrs. Charles Cooper, resides at home. Mrs. Winn, wife of the deceased, has been quite ill for some time, but has been improving. She, however, is not able to leaver her room. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to her in her afflictions.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 o'clock at the home, and later at the Island Creek church by the pastor, Rev. C. R. Culbertson. The deceased and family have been members of that church for many years. Interment will be made in the burying ground adjoining the church.
