Helen married James A. Burke on Oct. 10, 1940, at St. Mary's Church in Richland Center. In 1943, they moved to the Burke homestead, where they lived and farmed and raised their three children. Helen was a long time member of Dayton Ridge Homemakers club and the Goodwill club. She was a news correspondent for the paper for more than 50 years.
Survivors include her son, James Jr. (Carolyn) Burke of Richland Center; five grandchildren, Ken (Kathy) Carter of South Dakota, Kimberly Stuckey of Texas, Kathy (Danny) Massingill of Texas, Bryan (Cathy) Cigelske of Georgia, and Tony (Melissa) Burke of Richland Center; 11 great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Michael, Amie, Ian, Tyler, Dillon, Connor, Zachery, Burke, Bennit, and Hayden; two sisters, Lucille Engendorf of Madison, and Hildie Angell of Onalaska; four sisters-in-law, Pat Engendorf of Evansville, Peggy Burke of Illinois, Ruth Winkler of Florida, and Mary Lou Burke of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews. Helen was also a dear friend, mother, and grandmother to so many others: special nephew, Jim Burke; Billy and Jamie Jones; Isaac, Ethan, Cattalina, Savannah; Judy Leffler and her family; and Dale Storms. Her list could go on and on.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1981; her daughter, Shirley Cigelske of Alabama, in 1994; her daughter, Sharon Malonee of Texas, in 1994; two sisters, Ethelyn and Marie; and three brothers, Otto, Walter, and Clyde.
