JOSEPH ANTHONY VERNETTI

Joseph Anthony Vernetti was born December 7, 1909, in Mahaska county, Iowa. At birth, Joseph weighed less than two pounds, but the loving care and attention his mother and father gave him enabled Joseph to develop into a strong, healthy child.

He attended school in Tipperary and Olmitz, Ia., and started to work in the coal mines in Taylorville, Ill., in 1927, at the age of 18. In 1929 the family came to Williamson and Joe started to work with his father in the coal mines around Williamson until 1938.

Early in 1941 he went into military service and served until 1943. He was discharged because of the disability he incurred following a lengthy illness that seriously affected his heart.

Joe lived in Williamson most of the time since 1943, except for brief periods when he worked in other places. For the past several years he was unable to work because of his heart condition.

Joe loved the outdoors and became quite an expert on mushrooms. He was constantly searching and studying new varieties. He also like to fish for bullheads, an avocation he could enjoy with a minimum of physical exertion.

Numerous children were among Joe's countless friends. He liked to do things for the youngsters and delighted in counseling the little ones.

Early in November, 1962, Joe entered the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. He died at 10:15 Tuesday, March 5, 1963.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Russell and a member of the Williamson City Council.

Joseph is survived by his parents, Domenic and Mary Vernetti of Williamson. He also has two sisters living in St. Louis, Mo. They are Mrs. Fred (Jennie) Chiotti and Mrs. Charles (Madilyn) Sheddan. There are also four nieces and nephews living in St. Louis.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. March 9, 1963, at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. The Rev. John Orange officiated at the services. Interment was in the Chariton cemetery.
