Died Monday, December 7, 2009
Mary Inez Eanes Shorter, 87, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Tender Years Adult Care, 2785 Figsboro Road, Martinsville.
She formerly lived at 2 Tanglewood Drive, Martinsville.
She was born Jan. 23, 1922, in the Mountain Valley community of Henry County to Homer Robert "Bob" Eanes Sr. and Mary Beatrice Richardson Eanes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Paul R. Shorter, who died May 6, 1973; a sister, Helen Maxine Eanes; and three brothers, Stafford R. Eanes, Homer R. "Jim" Eanes Jr. and James Ralph Eanes.
She graduated from Axton High School, retired from Hooker Furniture Corp. as a bookkeeper, and in later years was associated with her brother, Bobby Eanes, Tobacconist, in Madison, N.C.
She was a member of Calvary Christian Church for more than 40 years and served as an elder, as a deacon and on the official board. She also was a CWF member, choir member and was a member of the Disciples Women.
She had served as president of the Paul R. Shorter DAV Auxiliary, which was named for her husband, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 42 and the retired U.S. Army Wives. Also, she had been a member of Fort Mayo Chapter DAR.
Surviving are a sister, Lois Eanes Frith of Bassett; two brothers, Bobby Gene Eanes and Clyde Nelson "Ted" Eanes, both of Martinsville; three nieces; and five nephews.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services with Ministers Donald Richardson and Ben Barbour officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until time for the service Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of a niece, Teresa F. Jamison, 4750 Figsboro Road, Martinsville.
