The son of Peter & Elizabeth (Rupp) Abel, he married Elizabeth Rupp (Keller - maiden name uncertain) January 12, 1843, in Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Howard (b. 10/01/44 - 195th Pa), Stephen Armstrong (b. 06/08/46 - 195th Pa), Adeline (b. 11/10/48), Thomas Jefferson (b. 10/03/50), Pierce (b. 09/16/52, d. 02/18/54), Sophia (b. 10/12/54 - married Israel Henry Jacobs), Elizabeth (b. 09/10/56, d. 12/04/58), Samuel (b. 06/06/58), Sarah (b. 02/29/60), John D. (b. 09/19/62), Anna Elizabeth (b. 07/31/64), Peter (b. 03/12/66), Albertus (b. 03/31/69), and Harris Wilton (b. 01/08/71). In 1860, he was an innkeeper living with his family in Hellam Township, York County.


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at an unrecorded age in Harrisburg April 21, 1861, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. C, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861.
