He became a member of Company I, 79th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. He was discharged at Nashville in June 1865. He participated in the battle of Buzzard's Roost, in Georgia; owing, however, to loss of health he did not take part in the principal service of the regiment.

He built a cabin on land that his father had owned. It was originally covered with a dense growth of timber which was cleared into a farm of 115 acres of which 65 were in cultivation.

He was a member of the Protestant Methodist Church. He was a Greenback Republican and represented the township as Supervisor, and for several years Collector of Taxes.

Married Sarah Jane Hull on December 31, 1857 in Clark County, Illinois.
