Nicholas was the son of Emanuel Den, Esq., of Kilkenny, Ireland. He studied medicine and then went to sea. Dr. Nicholas Augustus Den reached Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, by sea, coming by way of Monterey, on July 8, 1836. He was so impressed by the kindness and generosity of the Californios that he decided to stay. At Santa Bárbara he made the acquaintance of Daniel Hill and later married his daughter, Rafaela Rosa Antonia Hill y Ortega, at Mission Santa Ynez on June 1, 1843, the same year his younger brothers, Dr. Richard Somerset Den and William Alfred Den, arrived in Alta California from Ireland. William died just a few years later at San Francisco Oct. 6, 1849 (Weekly Alta California, Vol. I, No. 41, Oct. 11, 1849; 3:1). Nicholas engaged in stock-raising and served as the town's doctor. Dr. Den had at the time of his death 10,000 head of cattle and owned the ranchos of San Marcos, Dos Pueblos, Cañada del Corral, and Tequepís. He was survived by his wife, Rafaela, and 11 children.
